First came A, now here is a vocabulary list of sexuality related terms that start with the letter B. So what can you do with it?
Use it as a self-quiz to see how many you know. Use it as a topic generator for your next school paper, Wikipedia rabbit hole dive, or visit to the library. Use it to suggest a topic to me for an upcoming video, podcast, or other deep dive. Use it as inspiration for your next party theme, Halloween costume, or print out the words and decorate your apartment with them. OK just kidding about the last one… Are there any "B" terms I forgot? I recently got a pap, which is a routine cervical cancer screening test. When I walked into the exam room, I saw all the tools spread out and took a photo because I’m always a sexologist and always seeing opportunities for sex education, even when standing bottom-half-naked at the doctor’s office! This a list of the tools seen on the cart here, used to perform a pap test (in this pic, from right to left): Speculum This is the “duck lips” instrument that keeps the vaginal walls open so the medical provider can have better access to the cervix, which sits at the end of the vagina. Cervical Spatula This is one of the tools used to collect cervical cells for examination. The flat end, like a kitchen spatula, is used to scrape, in this case, cells off the outer cervix. Vaginal Swabs Basically like an extra large Q-Tip, these are used to blot away excess blood or mucus from the cervix and vagina so the blood/mucus cells don’t contaminate the sample. Cytobrush Another cell collection tool, this is a long stick with a round bristle brush at the end rotated in the opening of the cervix. Liquid-Based Crytology Container The cells collected from the cervical spatula and cytobrush are deposited into a small bottle of preservative liquids until it gets to the lab to be examined under a microscope. The cells used to be smeared across a glass slide, hence the term “pap smear”, but the liquid container method is more modern and offers more accurate results. Lubricant See that big pile of lube at the bottom left? That helps the speculum be inserted into the vagina with ease. Examination Table with Stirrups Laying down with feet in holders (not pictured) off the bottom of the table, this keeps the legs open, vagina relaxed, and the genitals at eye-level for the seated medical provider as they do the screening. #tbt to last year and the first episode of Sex in 60 Seconds, a sexual education video series in which I explain all about a topic, talking sssssssuper fast to give you as much content as possible in just ONE MINUTE! In this episode, I list as many sex topics that I can think of from A-Z in 60 seconds, and I invite you to let me know in the comments which one you'd like to learn more about in a future video! This is not exclusive content, as it's sponsored by Cal Exotics, but since social media continues to delete and restrict sexuality content, I wanted to post the series here for safe keeping, and for your learning and entertainment pleasure :) Here is a vocabulary list of sexuality related terms that start with the letter A. Except for one, in another country. Which I did pursue, despite the hassle of visas, international student fees, and missing home. Now, there are 84 institutions of higher learning offering bachelor degrees in human sexuality. 84! And some are in places that never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine at age 17 would someday offer sexuality degrees to undergrads- Iowa, Kansas, Indiana! Twelve of these sex degree granting universities are located within a reasonable commute to my childhood home. Damn! I was a decade too early. But lucky for you, there are now so many incredible education opportunities to pursue, and I'm sure there will be more every year until finally sexuality studies is as universal and as normal as economics, communications, marketing, or any other college major that examines a specific subset of human behavior.
